Voyages, explorations and Navigation - 1485 onwards.

Known world and barriers to trade. Rewards, fears and difficulties of long-distance seafaring. Life at sea, scurvy, navigation methods. Cabot's journey from Bristol in the "Matthew" in 1497 to Magellan's circumnavigation 1522.

Artefacts include charts, maps, spices, incenses, ships biscuits, silk cocoons, compass, lodestone, quadrant, cross-staff, a copy of Cabot's letter patent from Henry VII.

Activities include altitude measurement and "shooting the sun" (without looking at it.) and for the older children a dramatised version of the significance of the North star and its relevance to latitude.

It would be helpful if a globe could be provided.
