veneer, for which it would have been highly prized. It has some minor
replacements like setting, thermometer bolt, finial & ivory pateraes
and a replacement tube. The polish is remarkably good condition and
although not re-polished recently it most likely has been re-polished in

A very provincial almost rustic mercury stick barometer, by B Gillardoni
of Exeter. Known to be working 1816 as a Jeweller at Fore Street Exeter.
This would date from around that period. The trunk veneered herringbone
fashion in mahogany and inlaid with boxwood stringing as is the glazed door.
The turned mahogany cistern cover (with repairs) pleasantly aged, The circular
case on which it sits was fitted upside down by the case maker, evident
by the stringing At the top not the base! The curious semi circular pediment
perfectly original sat on a triple bead moulded base. Only the 2nd one I
have seen of this design in many years dealing.. It retains an old wire
hanging loop and the glass has ripples in it. The case in good colour, the
scale re-silvered, a replacement thermometer and mercury filled tube. In
good order.
We have often been asked for an antique barometer to suit an old country
cottage/farmhouse and this certainly is one that would fit very well to
that requirement. Simple but pleasant and honest. SOLD
